Marinus Link

A critical part of Australia’s renewable energy future

Marinus Link is a proposed undersea and underground electricity and data interconnector between North West Tasmania and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria.

It will enable the flow of more electricity in both directions, delivering low-cost, reliable and clean energy for customers in the National Electricity Market (NEM).

With Marinus Link, Tasmania can import low-cost renewable energy, such as surplus solar, while reserving hydropower and storing the extra energy. Green hydropower can then be exported to the mainland grid when it is needed most to reduce the risk of brownouts.
PROJECT STATUS

Marinus Link Pty Ltd (MLPL) is progressing the Design and Approvals phase of Marinus Link, with design, environmental assessments, community engagement and procurement underway.

MLPL is jointly owned by the Australian, Tasmanian and Victorian governments.

MLPL is a three-part equity ownership between the Australian Government (49%), the Victorian Government (33.3%) and the Tasmanian Government (17.7%).

Marinus Link will be built in two 750 MW stages, from 2026.
WHY WE NEED MARINUS LINK

As coal retires, Australia needs access to affordable, ‘on-demand’ electricity and the ability to store energy for long periods. Marinus Link can help to deliver this for all NEM customers.

Tasmania’s existing hydro capacity, along with wind resources and energy storage capability, are a reliable source of low-cost, on-demand, clean energy.

The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has confirmed that Marinus Link is a critical, and urgently required part of Australia’s low-cost, reliable and clean energy future. (Source: AEMO 2024 Integrated System Plan).

With Marinus Link, excess energy produced on the mainland may be stored as hydro, available for use when needed.
BENEFITS
- Marinus Link will put downward pressure on electricity prices. It will provide more stable, abundant, low-cost and clean energy. This will result in lower wholesale energy prices than without Marinus Link. 
- Marinus Link will deliver 3300 direct and indirect jobs and about $3.9 billion in direct economic investment in Tasmania and Victoria.
- Marinus Link will support growth in business and industry, stimulating investment in Tasmania’s pumped hydro storage and wind generation, and clean, high-tech industries such as green hydrogen.
- Marinus Link will increase optic fibre capacity between Tasmania and Victoria, providing greater choice and reliability for customers, which will help keep prices low.
- Marinus Link will increase energy security. Customers on the NEM will have access to a more abundant and diverse renewable energy supply and storage.
